AUN has launched the Student Chapter of Association for Computer Machinery (ACM). This chapter was launched with the initiative and support provided by the Dean of the School of IT & Computing (SITC). At the formal inaugural meeting of the chapter that was held on March 29, the student executive committee met with the founding professional members of the chapter to discuss the future course of action.

ACM student chapters are required to have a Chair, Vice Chair, and Treasurer who are ACM student members, as well as a Faculty Sponsor who is an ACM professional member. Dr. Narasimha Rao Vajjhala, a Senior Member of ACM and a member of the Computer Science department in SITC is the Faculty Sponsor for this chapter. Interested students may contact any of the student executive members for registration. At the moment, there is no registration fee for registering with the chapter.

AUN ACM was formally chartered on March 18 this year. As of this date, there were only two other active ACM Student Chapters in Nigeria.  ACM’s Professional and Student chapters worldwide serve as hubs of activity for ACM members and the computing community at large. They provide seminars, lectures, learning forums, and networking opportunities with peers and experts across the computing spectrum. ACM Student Chapters provide several benefits to the student community, including access to ACM Distinguished Speakers Program (DSP).

The ACM DSP is one of the premier technology outreach programs in computing industry with over 250 lectures from nearly 100 different speakers. AUN ACM Student Chapter members can also apply for the UPE/ACM Student Chapter Scholarship Award — Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the Honorary Computer Science Society, and ACM encourage academic excellence for students in the computing discipline.

UPE initiated this award with ACM to raise the importance of academic achievement and professional commitment in our future computer professionals. Up to two awards of $1,000 each are given from UPE each year to competition winners. Winners also receive a certificate of commendation. AUN ACM Student Chapter members are also eligible for a set of member benefits, including complimentary subscription to ACM’s flagship publication – Communications of the ACM. Chapter members also get a full-year subscription to XRDS – ACM’s student magazine and a number of e-newsletters. ACM is the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society, delivering resources that advance computing as a science and a profession.
